Monkey pox is an infectious disease caused by monkey virus, It occurs sporadically in some remote parts of central and West Africa. This virus was first discovered in monkeys hence the name, monkey pox. And it was first identified in 1958 by the State Serum Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, during an investigation into a pox-like disease among monkeys. In 1970 the first human case of monkey pox was recorded, this time around in Democratic Republic of Congo during a period of intensified effort to eliminate smallpox.
The first case of this virus was reported in Nigeria on September 22nd 2017 in Bayelsa State, South South Region of the country and has spread into the neighbouring states of Rivers, Abia, AkwaIbom, Ondo, Ebonyi etc. The infection can be contracted from direct contact with the blood, bodily fluids, or mucosal lesions of infected animals like monkeys, rats, squirrels, and rodents an also can be transmitted from human to human through physical touch, contact with stool, blood contact.
Vaccination against smallpox has been proven to be 85% effective in preventing Monkey pox .However, preventive measures are still highly recommendable. Eating inadequately cooked meat of infected animals is a possible risk factor so should be avoided. Also proper hygiene maintenance is highly advisable and recommendable
